Summary
Struggling under financial strain from her tight-fisted parents and numerous siblings, Laura’s situation worsens when a storm rips the roof off their home. Desperate, she seizes an opportunity to work at a reputedly haunted estate owned by an impeccably dressed, handsome duke with dark, weary eyes and obsessive habits. Despite the mansion’s eerie reputation, the pay is irresistible. Soon, Laura discovers she and the duke share the ability to see spirits. Each night, they work together guiding restless ghosts—like a little girl in the hall or a mysteriously tilting portrait—toward peace. In one startling moment, Laura reaches out to comfort the child, only for her hand to pass straight through. “That’s my cerebral cortex,” the ghost remarks dryly.
